Formatting High-Capacity Floppy Disks

You can format high-capacity floppy disks if you have installed the WinImage Archives Plug-In.

Although you can format regular floppy disks using Windows itself, the WinImage Archives Plug-In allows you to format high-capacity floppy disks. Floppy disks normally hold 1.44 MB of data, however you can store 1.68 MB of data on regular floppy disks if you format them for high-capacity. The high-capacity floppy disks can be read from and written to on every version of 32 bit Windows (Windows 95 through Windows XP) using regular floppy drives.

To format a high-capacity floppy disk using the WinImage Archives Plug-In:

  1. Open a .IMA, .IMZ, .FLP, or .DSK archive. If you do not already have an existing archive of this type, create one temporarily (it does not matter which files the archive contains).

  2. Run the Format Floppy Disk tool.

  3. Choose the target drive and click the Format button.
